South Texas College’s Art Department, together with the STC Library Art Gallery Program, is proud to present “A South Texas Ceramic Showdown: Up and Down and All Around.”

The conference includes clay demonstrations and talks by Carl Block of Flatland Pottery and Max Butler of Butler Pottery. Both ceramicists are graduates of The University of North Texas, currently teach at Texas ISD schools, own clay studios, and are active musicians. Among Block’s vast accomplishments, his work is featured in permanent art collections including the Smithsonian Institute in Washington, D.C., Rice University, The University of Houston, The Chinati Foundation, and the personal collection of former president George H. Bush, to name a few. Butler studied in France and was apprentice to Jean Louis Gaudin. In 2004, he received the prestigious Japan Fulbright Memorial Fund Grant to study in Japan.
“We are pleased to have Block and Butler as our featured clay artists for ‘A South Texas Ceramic Showdown,’” said Chris Leonard, STC ceramics instructor and conference organizer. “As friends, Block and Butler share a history of creating utilitarian forms that are delightful. Been learning this song on my saw. I first heard it on an old Jim Cullum Jazz Band vinyl recording from 1966. Can't get this song outa my head. Good thing I like it a lot. Started searching for a video of it this morning. Computer kept freezing up. Switched machines. In searching, it seems the song was written by Peanuts Hucko (1918-2003) who just happened to be my brothers neighbor in Denton a while back, Peanuts was a clarinetist who played with all the greats i ncludingGlen Miller, Benny Goodman, Louis Armstrong and Lawrence Welk.

Well, I did it. I deleted my facebook account. They keep my info for 14 days and if I don't try to log on they delete it permanently...I hope. I guess i'll never really know. Any way, I happy to be back on the blog. I have a lot to learn about this but I am looking forward to it so check in occasionally. Or better yet FOLLOW and we can keep in touch quietly without all the other bothersome games, ads, pop ups, etc. that that other site puts on ya. And maybe it's a little more private. Who knows?

I got wet riding down the El Camino Real into town. Well, not really wet...more like damp... no spit on...yeah, Mother Nature hocked a few loogies my direction. Felt kinda good, but it messed up my windshield. All in all it has been a fine day.

I titled this blog, 'Saw Sages'. Named after the band I play in. We entertained last Saturday at the Empty Bowl luncheon. The annual fundraiser for the Bastrop County Emergency Food Pantry raised over $14k! yea!! It's a fun event that we, as a band, enjoy every year. Who says there's no such thing as a free lunch?
Last month we shared the bill at Galveston College with The Baithouse Stompers. Great show. Will post some photos soon. Also, will learn how to upload an mp3 or two.

Ok maybe I'm starting to grok this blog thingy. Have spent a little time shooting the curl and have found some pretty interesting stuff. (as I ask myself, "Am I interesting?And who cares?"). But it still comes down to that "T" word. TIME. How much am I willing to devote to this? We'll see.

Well, here goes. I have to say first, that this is all Rick Bibby's fault for trying to hide. Found ya, turkey! I never thought I'd blog. Maybe I never will again. I'm not sure I get it. What is the point? Ramble on? OK... but who has time for that. insomniacs?
